i love webcomics!

when i first attended middle school, i was introduced to the amazing world of anime and manga. i read the same volumes of naruto that were available in my library, and i spent my good grades money on my favorite volumes at the bookstore. as an adult, i've mostly grown out of reading manga (even if i refuse to part with my small collection of manga i hold dear to my heart), but my love for comics as a storytelling medium has persisted. it'll never die!

if you don't mind, i'd like to share some of my favorites with you! hopefully you'll find one you like?

countdown to countdown by velinxi. ongoing!

"in the year 2044, "demifloras"—humans that have developed inhuman abilities—are targeted and harvested for their pricey body parts. iris black, a demiflora that possesses the ability to bring his drawings to life, is sheltered in a correctional facility that houses demifloras. outcasted for his inability to suppress his powers, he yearns to find a place that accepts him for who he is. his chance comes one night when a daring outsider sneaks into the lab."

a popular sci-fi webcomic and one of my favorites! content warnings are posted on the very first page of the webcomic.

daughter of a thousand faces by velinxi. ongoing!

"shen yuhua is a disappointment to the grand chaoyang palace sect. with no powers or great beauty, she brings nothing to the table for her immortal father. that all changes one day when she accidentally meets chu tian, the famed demon of a thousand faces, and her father's arch nemesis... and accidentally frees him from his prison."

one of my current favorites! also by velinxi and her team, this story is more fantasy-oriented. content warnings are on indivudual pages as necessary.

i'm the grim reaper by graveweaver. ongoing!

"on earth, there are bad people, and then there are really bad people. if you’re one of the latter, you don’t just get sent to hell, you get sent to hell and get assigned a job collecting the souls of some of the worst people on earth. such is the career path of a young woman named scarlet, who dies and is delivered down to the fiery underworld, only to find herself in an entry level position as… the grim reaper!"

another favorite! the author wears their inspriations on their sleeve, and they create a very endearing story! content warnings include violence and gore, and other warnings are on individual pages as necessary.

lackadaisy by tracy butler. on hiatus.

"set in 1920s st. louis, missouri, lackadaisy is the story of an unlikely gang of jazz cats, alley cats, and fat cats doing their best to survive the bootleg business while keeping their subterranean speakeasy afloat."

this comic has gripped me ever since i saw the pilot on youtube in april! the story and characters are near and dear to my heart, and with the promise of a debut season on the horizon, i'm eager to see where lackadaisy goes from here! content warnings include ableism, alcohol consumption, blood, familial estrangement, gun violence, and medical devices.

stand still, stay silent by minna sundberg. complete!

"it's been 90 years after the end of the old world. most of the surviving population of the known world live in iceland, the largest safe area in existence, while the safe settlements in the other nordic countries; norway, sweden, denmark, and finland, are small and scarce. countless mysterious and unspoken dangers lurk outside the safe areas, the silent world, and hunters, mages and cleansers will spend their lives defending the settlements against the terrifying beings. because of a great fear towards everything in the silent world, no official attempts to explore the ruins of the old have been made, and most of the information about it has turned into ancient lore, known by few. but now, at last, it is time to send out a research crew into the great unknown! a poorly funded and terribly unqualified crew, but a crew nonetheless."

first published in 2013, stand still, stay silent is a comic i treasure dearly. it carried me through some very lonely months, and i'll forever be grateful for it. while the comic has been completed as of 2022, the author and illustrator, minna sundberg, had a change of faith over the course of the covid-19 pandemic, and chose to end the story after only two adventures. please don't let this dissuade you from reading this webcomic; it's a very special story! severe content warnings include animal death, blood, body horror, disease, gore, medical devices, and suicide.

tiger, tiger by petra erika nordlund. ongoing!

"after half a year at sea, lord remy bonnaire has returned to lucentia in the company of his friend and first mate, lord jamis arlesi. his sister—and jamis's fiancee—lady ludovica awaits them. ludovica has other plans for the reunion, however. through a convoluted plan of her own design, she manages to leave the bonnaire estate with her fiance, taking her brother's ship and clothes and his very identity with her. ludovica hopes to find love and adventure, and to write a book about her favourite subject: the fascinating life cycle of sea sponges!"

a new favorite of mine; i discovered it only recently compared to the others! humorous and heartfelt, this story promises to hold your attention long enough to tell you all about the beauty of sea sponges. content warnings include animal death, blood, parental abuse, and thalassophobia.
